The ‘House of David’ inscribed on a victory stele

This fragment of a monumental inscription from the First Temple period, discovered in the excavation of the ancient city of Dan, is the first found in this country to mention the ‘House of David.’ It is the only extra-biblical reference to the Davidic dynasty ever to appear. The stele was smashed in ancient times, and this fragment was found embedded in the pavement at the entrance to the outer gate of the city.

Written in Aramaic, the inscription is part of a victory stele apparently erected during the rule of a king of Aram, and relates to his triumphs over his enemies. The reference to the Davidic dynasty suggests that a Judaean king was involved in the events described. It was engraved in alphabetic script on a large stone that had been smoothed for writing. The words are separated by dots.

The rarity of this type of inscription suggests that it was not common for the kings of Judah and Israel to erect monuments in their own honor. Indeed, the stele was erected by an Aramaean ruler.

Recently, two further fragments of this inscription were discovered that will provide additional information on the events described.
